Dr. Peter Green, Director of the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University, is one of the few recognized specialists on Celiac Disease in the United States. He is a Professor of Clinical Medicine at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University and Attending Physician at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

Dr. Green received his medical degree from University of Sydney, Australia. After completing his Residency and GI fellowship in Sydney he became a Research fellow at Harvard Medical School and in the Gastroenterology Department at the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and the American College of Gastroenterology as well as a Member of the American Gastroenterologic Association and American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

Dr Green is a former President of the New York Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and remains on the Council of the Society. He was on the Postgraduate Educational Committee, American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and a founding member of the Clinical Teaching Project, a committee established by the American Gastroenterological Association to develop teaching materials for gastroenterologists. In addition, he has lectured on celiac disease at many medical institutions throughout the United States as well as national and international meetings.

The Celiac Disease Center was established within the Department of Medicine at Columbia University in 2001, Its mission: to redefine the future of celiac disease and treatment on an ongoing basis, through continuing advances in biomedical research, patient care, and physician and public education.

Under the guidance of Dr. Green, The Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University is the only center in the United States that provides comprehensive medical care, including nutrition, for adult and pediatric patients with celiac disease. ALL of the Center’s research is into celiac disease—clinical epidemiology, and mechanisms of celiac disease and patient and physician education. The Center is diagnosing and treating more than 2000 patients annually from around the world.

Dr. Stefano Guandalini, Professor of Pediatrics Section Chief, Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition Director, University of Chicago Celiac Disease Program, is an internationally recognized expert on celiac disease.  He is also known for his expertise in the research and treatment of other diarrheal diseases in children.

Dr. Guandalini's clinical and research efforts have greatly influenced the way celiac disease is diagnosed and treated today. His work contributed to the revision of 20-year-old guidelines for celiac disease diagnosis. These guidelines are now used worldwide for the diagnosis of celiac disease in both children and adults.

Dr. Guandalini created the University of Chicago Celiac Disease Program in response to the low rate of celiac disease detection in the United States. This innovative program is dedicated to patient care services, research activities, medical education, and public awareness initiatives in order to increase the rate of celiac diagnoses and improve the lives of celiac patients. The Celiac Disease Program serves patients of all ages.

Dr. Guandalini is the current president of the Federation of International Societies for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition. He was selected from a worldwide pool of candidates to be the first president of this federation.

Dr. Thomas Brannagan is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, as well as the American Association of Electrodiagnostic Medicine.  Before coming to Cornell University, Dr. Brannagan was the associate director of the EMG laboratory at MCP/Hahnemann University, where he was also the co-director of the MDA/ALS center of Hope. He is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, as well as the American Association of Electrodiagnostic Medicine. He is also a member of the Neuropathy Association and the Peripheral Nerve Society. Dr. Brannagan's major interest is in the treatment of immune-mediated neuropathies. His publications have focused on new treatments for chronic demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP), painful neuropathies, HIV neuropathies and the use of IVIg in Neurological disorders, and the Neurological Complications from Celiac Disease.

Dr. Janet Choi is an Assistant Professor in the Obstetrics and Gynecology department at Columbia University.  After finishing her medical school and residency training at Columbia, she went on to complete her fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University.  She is currently involved in clinical research assessing the frequency of latent celiac disease in the female infertility population.

Dr. Ted Malahias is a forerunner in detecting celiac disease through dentistry.  Working with Dr. Peter Green, he conducted a research study to determine the dental enamel defects in persons with CD.  He initiated an intensive screening to confirm his findings.

Steve Plogsted, PharmD, BCNSP, is a clinical pharmacy specialist at Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, who has become an expert on how medications interrelate with celiac disease issues.  He is co-author of the book "A Guide to Living with Gluten Intolerance".

Trisha Lyons, RD, LD, is a dietitian at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. Since being diagnosed with celiac disease, Trisha has been actively involved with the Northeast Ohio Celiac Disease Support Group, has raised money for CD research, has studied the disease extensively, and frequently educates patients and medical professional on celiac disease and the gluten-free diet.

Vanessa Maltin, celiac and author of "Beyond Rice Cakes: A Young Person's Guide to Cooking, Eating & Living Gluten-Free", is the director of outreach and programming for the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness (NFCA).  As a graduate in journalism, she has been a reporter for Cox Newspapers, Palm Beach Post, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Dayton Daily News, and the Austin American Statesman.

Denise Ramey, RN, has been very active in the celiac community.  She is Chairperson for the Canton/Alliance Chapter of the CSA (Celiac Sprue Association) and has been very active in organizing yearly Celiac Walks to raise money for celiac research.

Connie Sarros is the author of four gluten-free cookbooks and the DVD "All You Wanted To Know About Gluten-free Cooking".  She has written the "Newly Diagnosed Survival Kit" and creates customized weekly menus for those on a gluten-free diet who have additional dietary restrictions.  Connie has been a speaker at support groups throughout the country and many National Celiac Conventions.

Mark Arredondo is a 4th year med student at NEOUCOM. He has just received his residency assignment in Akron at Summa in internal medicine.

Julie Thomas is a currently pursuing and MD at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.  She was diagnosed with celiac disease during her sophomore year at Ohio State University.  Despite living in a dorm, then in an apartment with three roommates, she was able to adapt to a gluten-free lifestyle.
